NRW Art Club To Host Unusual Fashion Show

North Rose-Wolcott Art students are busy preparing for Project Phoenix, a runway extravaganza of recycled, re-designed, re-imagined fashion. Inspired by the popular reality TV show, Project Runway, students are creating wearable art. It's a fun but risky experiment for the students. Very few of the students know how to sew. This means that most of the outfits are made using tape, hot glue or staples instead of needle and thread. “What we lack in garment making experience is made up for in enthusiasm,” said Deborah Teska

Outfits are being constructed using old prom gowns or dresses, jackets, jeans and t-shirts. These are being deconstructed and reconstructed. Other materials include caution tape, plastic shopping bags, newspapers, old curtains, bottle tops, chicken wire, nylon screening and labels! Some students are altering their clothing by using fabric paint. The solutions to creating an outfit are producing some interesting garments. The theatre design class will also be displaying creative costumes. Students were asked to create costume designs for one of two plays, “ Alice in Wonderland” or “Midsummer Night's Dream”. Studio Art students redesigned sneakers and these will be on display also.

The High School Art Club will be hosting a runway show featuring the outfits on Tuesday, May 20th at 6:30 in the high school cafeteria. They will also have some re-imagined shoes and creative costumes on display.

The show is free, but the Club is asking for donations to benefit Art Club and AV Club. “It will be a fun activity for the whole family. If your kids like Project Runway, it might be fun for them to see a local interpretation of it, “ said Teska.

Residents can take the time to vote on the school budget and stop in and see the show. Desserts will available for sale.

“We hope to have at least 15 outfits ready for the runway by Tuesday. We invite everyone to come up to the high school to join in the fun.”
