Gananda Central School District Board of Education President, Ms. Lisa Finnegan, called to order a business meeting at 7:00 PM in the District Office Meeting Room. Meeting minutes from the June 27, 2012 meeting were approved as presented, and the minutes from the July 10, 2012 meeting were approved with one amendment. Other business conducted included the approval of the Consent Agenda Financial Reports, and the Committee on Special Education and Committee on Preschool Education Recommendations. Under business the board approved a Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Contract for services, and an additional contract for Transportation Services effective July 1, Wayne CSD, and acceptance a $500.00 donation from the School Library System.
Under Personnel, the board approved the following:
•Creation of an Elementary Teaching Assistant Position
•Acceptance of Ms. Denise Brooks (Food Service Helper) and Mr. Stephen Youngman (Secondary Special Education Teacher) Resignations
•Leave of Absence if Ms. Mary Crelley (High School Guidance Counselor)- Effective August 29, 2012- September 14, 2012
•Ms. Karla Yarrow- a new hire as a .7 FTE Physical Education Teacher- Effective 8/29/12

A special report was given regarding upcoming Administration Retreat. Superintendent Shawn Van Scoy requested feedback from the board regarding district initiatives, whether or not they are still pointing the district in the right direction. Some areas the board agreed should be addressed during the retreat included grading processes in the high school, student recognition, program evaluations, low enrollment in French and the possibility of introducing Mandarin in its place, process reports on initiatives, elective offerings in the high school, communications with benchmark districts, the change of early dismissals to half days for the 2012-13 school year, the possibility of introducing study halls in the high school, bus routes vs. walking district, discussion of operations management, and further examination of extracurricular activities, to name a few. The board also expressed a desire to continue to improve upon developing partnerships with local businesses to foster future career exposure for its students.
During the Superintendent’s Report Dr. VanScoy reported having received a letter from the Penfield Central School District regarding its interest in exploring potential shred services with the GCSD. The board agreed that this is a positive for both districts, and will agree to engge in conversations regarding future partnering. Dr. VanScoy also informed the board that he will in the near future be addressing the need to fill two full time mechanic positions in the Transportation Department, and also noted that he may recommend the district hire one head mechanic and one full time mechanic.
No other business came before the board and the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting of the GCSD Board of Ed will be held on Wednesday, August 8th, at 7:00 PM in the Gananda Central District Office Meeting Room.
