Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

To the big shakeup in Buffalo. The last place Sabres fired coach Ron Rolston and general manager Darcy Regier and replaced them with former Buffalo coach Ted Nolan and Pat LaFontaine. I’m not sure what year it is, but the team and its fans need something to be excited about. This isn’t the answer to Buffalo’s woes, but at least it takes some focus away from what’s happening on the ice. Lafontaine will be helpful in vetting a new GM and Nolan should provide some guidance to a young team.
According to ESPN, participation in Pop Warner football dropped 9.5% between 2010-2012….the largest drop on record. The reason….the same thing I wrote about last week….parents are concerned about head injuries. I don’t blame parents for taking action, but I wonder about the future of football in our country.
Thumbs Down: The Kansas City Chiefs second leading receiver, Dwayne Bowe, was busted for speeding and marijuana possession this week…but guess what….the team is taking no action against him. Why would they? They’ve got a big showdown against Denver Sunday night. Would he have been reprimanded if they were playing the Jaguars this weekend?
The Managers of the Year in Major League Baseball are Terry Francona of Cleveland and Clint Hurdle of Pittsburgh. I may be a little biased, but shouldn’t the American League Manager of the Year award go to Red Sox Manager John Farrell? All he did was take a team that finished last place a year ago and turn them into the best team in baseball. I know that they vote before the postseason….but come on! What more can you do?
The Yankees Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and Hiroki Kuroda were all offered $14.1 million to play next season. All of them rejected it. They all hope to score much bigger contracts. Can you imagine being offered $14.1 million to play a sport and saying no?
Funny thought of the week:
The Washington Redskins and the New York Giants both have a pitiful 3-6 record (as many wins as the Buffalo Bills) yet they are just 1 1/2 games out of first place.
