State Police Investigators in Wolcott reported the arrest on Monday (5/20)...
Another cheater in the world of baseball. A’s pitcher Bartolo Colon is the latest player to be suspended 50 games after testing positive for testosterone. The suspension comes a week after San Francisco’s Melky Cabrera was busted for the exact same thing. When will these players learn? I’ll tell you one thing…..a 50 day or 100 day (second offense) suspension isn’t doing the trick.
Colon will lose $469,945 of his $2 million base salary this year. However, it will not affect the $750,000 he’s earned in performance bonuses based on starts and $150,000 based on innings. So let me get this right….he’s been busted for using performance enhancing drugs and he gets to keep the money for the games that he played while using those drugs? Can someone tell me how that makes sense?
If Major League Baseball wants to be taken seriously again, then the punishments for players found using banned substances needs to be stricter. I agree with what Hall of Famer Johnny Bench tweeted yesterday: “@MLB players who knowingly took drugs should have their contracts voided. Why should clubs be punished financially?” Couldn’t agree more Johnny!
Some other quick rants….
Bills fans have hated the fact that a few home games have been played in Toronto over the past few seasons. Well, at least you can drive to those games. It could be worse….you could be a Jacksonville fan. The Jaguars will play 4 home games in London starting with the 2013 season.
Former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan reportedly has been tabbed to be Kelly Ripa’s full time co-host on Live with Kelly. Don’t worry, I’m confused too.
50-year old Roger Clemens will pitch for the Sugar Land Skeeters (an independent minor league team near Houston) starting Saturday night. If this leads to a big league comeback, he will have to wait even longer to get into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Actually, that may be good….it may take a long time for voters to forget that whole steroid controversy.
I’ve shared my distaste with obsessive celebrations in the NFL before and I saw a great clip this week of a Canadian Football League player backpedaling into the end zone after returning a kickoff, only to be tackled at the 1 yard line. I applaud former Bills coach and current Jacksonville coach Mike Mularkey for figuring out a brilliant way to combat those stupid touchdown celebrations. For every Jaguar who scores a touchdown and simply hands the ball to the ref, he’ll donate $250 to Ronald McDonald House, and the Jags will match it.
