Tuesday Mugshot
State Police out of Williamson reported stopping a Route 104 westbound...
Here we go again. Look, I know most of the “mainstream” media shy away from telling it like it is, but we kind of pride ourselves with our approach to the news. Many, many years ago I did an in-depth interview with a convicted sexual predator that ended up on the front page. During the interview the man used the term ‘masturbation’. It set off all kinds of bells and whistles with some readers questioning how we could use such a word in a story, especially when young children could be reading the paper. I guess I should have said the “m” word, but I figured that would set everybody off in a tizzy.
Over the years we have been chastised for using the word “hell’, “damn” and a few other nasty words. Again, the “h” and “d” words. Of course we also used the “n” word (nigger) when we were either quoting, or using the word in a relevant story. Then there is the “s” word, often seen as sh_t, not to be confused with the other “s” word sp_c.
It’s not like we don’t understand and say the word to ourselves when a TV announcer, or person quoting a story, replaces nigger with the “n” word, but somehow not hearing, or seeing the actual word makes us feel better, politically correct.
Two weeks ago in a front page story, a man arrested for using alleged threats involving county department secretaries was quoted as saying: “He said maybe we would listen to him if he came here with a “fucking gun”, maybe that would get our attention.” Instead of printing “f__cking” we printed the whole word. Several readers were shocked, others said it was about time we stopped screwing around with words some feel are offensive.
By the way, in the phrase “He said maybe we would listen to him if he came here with a “fucking gun”, maybe that would get our attention.”… does the offensive word mean a weapon that has, or is used to have sex? I mean, that word has really lost its definition over the past hundred years or so.
I find it amazing how “main stream” media can show pieces of bodies blown to pieces, stick a microphone in the face of a parent who just lost a child, or find the latest headline in a Kardashian sister’s low-cut dress, but some innocuous words and actual quotes offend the sensitivities of some readers.
Do I like the words nigger, spic, etc, words that demean a race, culture, ethnicity? Absolutely not! Pretending they do not exist, however, and replacing them with cute letters, or dashes where missing letters are inserted is pure crap. Oh, that was another word I was chastised for using.
Also, pretending your kids have not, or will never use some “swear” words, or know their meaning is poo. (Yup, another dirty word I have been called out on.)
I have participated in these word/letter omissions in the past, but decided it was time to come clean, call a shit, a shit (another word that has many definitions in use). When someone uses the “f” bomb, or uses one of the too many words we somehow find offensive, we retard our society in anti-euphemisms. Yeah, I know we can no longer use the ‘r’ word, but its use and definition fit here. Some people use the word ‘retard’ in a disparaging slang, so that makes the word a piece of doo-doo cocka.
Pretty soon I guess we will all be writing and talking in the secret code that will stop all from offending, being offended. Till next time LOL…Lots Of Love.
