Everything old is new again

Retro, old school or throwback, it seems everything old is cool again. From clothes, to food to everything in-between.

Let’s start with an odd one: Baby names. It seems like there’s been a shift recently in how we name our kids. A few years ago you couldn’t escape all the Aidens, Jaydens and Braydens out there.

Now however, the trend is skewing “old-school”. A handful of names once popular from 1910 to 1920 are already weaving their way back into style.

For girls, it’s Anna, Julia, Grace, Ella, Charlotte.

For boys, Jack, Sam, William, Andrew and Charles.

Honestly, I like it. Nice, strong, normal names. Not like others I’ve heard…say for example Devin.

How about food? For many years there was a big pull back on using sugar in anything. Sugar was seen as evil and the cause of America’s growing Obesity epidemic. Now we find out it wasn’t sugar that was doing that damage, but our own inability to consume things in moderation. Now soda companies have come out with “Throwback” flavors that use real sugar. By the way we still aren’t getting any thinner.

Now onto the biggie, clothing. Styles and trends go in and out of fashion. When I was younger, dark jeans and plaid shirts were lame. So were wooly sweaters and velcro shoes. However I just described the outfit I’m wearing today. Now I’m trendy as hell.

My only hope is that I can ride the trends gracefully into my old age, where it will all be cool again. I’ve seen men wearing hats again. Not baseball caps but actually hats. The most advanced piece of technology I carry, my iPhone, is kept inside a little case in my pocket that looks like an old leather book. How hip am I?

Inevitably these things won’t last for ever. One day I’m going to look in the mirror and realize I’m the dad who’s still trying to look cool…and is not pulling it off. But then again I probably won’t care much either. I’ll be too busy playing with my iPhone 10 and wondering why all these kids look like punks.
