Nicholas Newman spent two weeks in intensive care with a broken neck and crushed vertebrae
The Times recently learned that Monica Deyo, former Supervisor in the Town of Marion, has suffered a tragedy in her family's life. On Nov. 11th, Monica and Arney Deyo's 17-year-old grandson, Nicholas Newman, was critically injured in an ATV accident in Medina.
He was ejected from the machine and hit a guard rail head-on. It was fortunate that he wearing a helmet, or else the outcome would have been even more severe. He was unresponsive at the scene, and was Mercy Flighted to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he spent two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit.
Nicholas was on a respirator for most of the time, and had surgery to fuse his broken neck and crushed vertebrae. The nature of the accident compressed/crushed the base of his spinal column, and he is now paralyzed from the waist down. He was flown to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta , Georgia , on Nov. 26th, and he will be there until at least the end of January. Shepherd is a nationally acclaimed spinal cord/brain injury rehabilitation hospital, specializing in adolescent care.
Nicholas went to school in Marion through 4th grade, and his mother (Holly Deyo, Monica & Arney's oldest daughter) still lives in Marion.
Friends of Nicholas & Holly have organized a Ziti Dinner Fundraiser to help Holly with the many expenses she faces now, as well as in the future. Her immediate needs have been her travel expenses to Georgia , and since she has been unable to work steadily at her job, her paycheck has been greatly reduced.
So much of the adaptive equipment is not fully covered - if covered at all - by insurance, and Nicholas is going to need a great deal of care and equipment for the rest of his life. The doctors at Strong and Shepherd stated that, at this time, medically, Nicholas will never walk again, and this is a crushing blow to a young man who was once a star soccer & lacrosse player on his teams. His whole life was wrapped around sports.
The Fundraiser dinner will be held at the Marion High School cafeteria on January 14th, from 4:30 - 7:00; adults $6.00; children under 12 $4.00.
Many unique gift baskets will also be available for raffle prizes at the event. Tickets are available at the high school & elementary school offices, the Marion Town Hall, the dental offices of Dr. Thomas Stevens, as well as from any family member or organizer Steve Kuhn. Checks may be made out to Steve if making a donation.
