Famous South Philadelphia Mummers featured
The 49th Apple Blossom Festival is coming! Each year, to celebrate the season's transformation, a handful of community volunteers host an annual festival – it is the longest, continuous running celebration of its kind in the state. For an entire week (May 10 through May 18), Williamson will become the region's Apple Blossom capital.
This year's theme is most appropriate – Welcome to the Jungle – as Saturday's Main Street parade goes tropical when the world famous South Philadelphia Mummers step out with their bold new feathered costumes and lively, rhythmic music. A flock of feather flopping, strutting musicians will swoop down onto the main parade route and entertain parade watchers along the way…and put on a grand show at the grand stand. Where else?
The parade will be led, by Williamson's own High School Marching Band with their apple blossom tubas marching like white and pink soldiers down the street. They will be followed by themed Welcome to the Jungle floats, the Apple Blossom Queen and Princess and their courts, local officials, bands from surrounding school districts and towns, local fire departments with their equipment blaring and flashing, antique tractors and cars. Each year the parade has become bigger and better.
The Apple Blossom Festival is kicked off by the annual search for a queen and princess at the coronation held at the Williamson High School on May 10. In 2007, forty-seven candidates – Williamson blossom beauties: Elementary girls for Princess, Middle School preteens for Junior Attendants; and High School young ladies for Queen - appeared before judges for the honor of wearing the tiaras and sashes indicating they were selected as members of the Apple Blossom royalty.
