It was just after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday when an eastbound CSX train headed for Fort Drum derailed on tracks along Division Street in Palmyra . Twenty rail cars, part of an 85 car freight loaded with coal, left the tracks after a reported axle problem with one of the cars. A reported 200 tons of coal was spilled. CSX workers began the round-the-clock arduous task of clearing the major CSX and Amtrak lines that halted rail traffic for almost 24 hours. Workers reported opening one of the lines on late Thursday night and traffic resumed on both tracks on Friday. Amtrak passengers were routed to destinations via bus rides. Piles of coal still remained alongside the tracks . No one was injured in the accident, almost the exact same place where a CSX train derailed carrying, among other freight, propane gas tanks in 2003.
